Saalik and The 5 after 7 Project celebrate the birthdays of Charles
Mingus (April 22, 1922) and Joe Henderson (April 24, 1937) by doing a
musical tribute on the 23rd of April at 8:30pm at the Velvet Lounge.
(67 East Cermak Rd.) Admission $10
Special Guests musicians are Harrison Bankhead and Edward Wilkerson.
Mingus is considered one of
the most important composers and performers of jazz, and he recorded
many highly regarded albums. Dozens of musicians passed through his
bands and later went on to impressive careers. His tunes—though melodic
and distinctive—are not often re-recorded, in part because of their
unconventional nature. Mingus was also influential and creative as a
band leader, recruiting talented and sometimes little-known artists
whom he assembled into unconventional and revealing configurations.
A
lasting figure on the jazz scene, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson has
quietly pursued his craft with alearned passion. A central contributor
to the classic Blue Note sessions of the 1960s and a composer,
bandleader, and educator through the 1970s and 1980s, he stepped out of
the shadows of the industry's saxophone giants in the early 1990s,
recording tributes to jazz greats Billy Strayhorn and Miles Davis.
